Garage / Workshop Building Planning

The garage/workshop is the first major construction we will be undertaking on our farm.  It will be up on the upper pasture, relatively close to our future home site.

Since this will also house our workshop, this is really our main big priority for building.  Building other structures on-site will be much easier once this is constructed.  Also, this will house the first plumbing on our site, which will definitely make it more convenient to be working on site, allowing access to running toilets and showers.

Functionality

The garage/workshop will include several seperate rooms which will accomodate many of our on-farm needs:

  1. Workshop
  2. Garage and tractor storage
  3. Abattoir
    1. Chicken processing area
    2. Walk-in freezer for meat storage
  4. Root cellar
    1. Vegetable washing and packing area
    2. Cold room for vegetable storage
  5. Storage loft (office space)

In addition, it is planned as the entry point for electricity and internet to our property and will work as a hub for those networks/grids.  As such,   the solar panel farm will be behind the garage workshop and feed power into the electric closet of the garage/workshop.

Planning Process

We began working on a potential design early this year and on April 10th, we started working with an architect.   Below are some of the preliminary designs that went back and forth.

  1. Initial design documents provided to architect. ( 4/20/2018 )
  2. First draft from the architect after the first meeting. ( 5/11/2018 )
  3. Second draft from the architect after feedback and second meeting. ( 5/24/2018 )
  4. Third draft from the architect, leading up to the third meeting.  ( 6/8/2018 )
  5. Fourth draft from the architect, now with electrical portions. ( 6/26/2018 )
  6. Preliminary final draft from architect, as the design heads to the engineering phase (12/5/2018)
  7. Architecural rendering of garage/workshop building (1/10/2019)
